FAQs
How long until I can walk or drive on new concrete?
Fresh concrete sets within hours after it’s poured. But despite its rock-solid appearance, it hasn’t yet developed the strength needed to resist impact and weight. Properly curing the concrete improves its durability and wear resistance by retaining moisture in the slab so that the concrete continues to gain strength. You should wait at least 24 hours before walking and 5 - 7 days before driving on fresh concrete.
Can I pour my own concrete?
You can, however we would not recommend it. Several factors go into ensuring your concrete is poured correctly and constructed expertly. From assessing your ground state, compacting, levelling, and forming, concrete is a balance between timing and skill. Even small mistakes in site preparation, concrete mixing, or concrete finishing can cause significant structural problems requiring costly repairs. We recommend you hire an expert.
Do I need council approval before I pour new concrete?
It is depending on what you are looking to construct. According to the relevant Council’s policies and specifications, you will need to obtain written consent from the Council before building any kerb, crossover, or driveway. Other project approvals vary by size for e.g. concrete over a BBQ area, a pool or a shed slab. We encourage our clients to get in touch with their local Council before works proceed.
Can a cracked concrete driveway be repaired?
Depending on how your driveway is poured and the age and use of your concrete, cracks can appear on the surface, allowing water to seep inside and erode the concrete base. A fix is determined by the size and depth of the crack. Small cracks can be filled and we can reseal your driveway, however larger cracks are a little more difficult. For larger cracks, it is best to cut out the damage and repour. We would also fit in expansion joints and saw cuts to allow your concrete to ‘breathe’ - expand and contract.
How thick should a standard driveway be?
In NSW, the concrete slab for a driveway should be about 100 mm thick if you intend to use it for vehicles less than 3 tonne gross mass. Where the driveway is expected to see even infrequent use by vehicles of between 3t and 10t, a minimum of thickness of 150mm is required.
How do you determine how much concrete I need?
Concrete is sold by volume measured in cubic metres. You’ll need to multiply the length and width of the slab in metres and divide it by the square-m coverage based on slab thickness to determine the amount of concrete needed. We are fully transparent in our quotes and happy to explain this at your home during our obligation free quote.
